Inverse relations between amounts of air pollution and orographic precipitation.

چکیده
Particulate air pollution has been suggested as the cause of the recently observed decreasing trends of 10 to 25% in the ratio between hilly and upwind lowland precipitation, downwind of urban and industrial areas. We quantified the dependence of this ratio of the orographic-precipitation enhancement factor on the amounts of aerosols composed mostly of pollution in the free troposphere, based on measurements at Mt. Hua near Xi'an, in central China. The hilly precipitation can be decreased by 30 to 50% during hazy conditions, with visibility of less than 8 kilometers at the mountaintop. This trend shows the role of air pollution in the loss of significant water resources in hilly areas, which is a major problem in China and many other areas of the world.

New evidence of orographic precipitation suppression by aerosols in central China
The correlation between light precipitation events and visibility at Mt. Hua, (Shannxi Province, China) and at the surrounding plains stations was analyzed. Trends and changes in visibility, precipitation, the precipitation difference between Mt. Hua and the plains stations (De) and wind speed over the study area during the years 1980–2009 were also investigated. The significant positive correl...
متن کاملStatus of CO as an air pollutant and its prediction, using meteorological parameters in Esfahan, Iran
The present study analyzes air quality for Carbon monoxide (CO), in Esfahan with the measurements taken in three different locations to prepare average data in the city. The average concentrations have been measured every 24 hours, every month and every season with the results showing that the highest concentration of CO occurs generally in the morning and at the beginning of night, while the l...

متن کاملPrecipitation and air pollution at mountain and plain stations in northern China: Insights gained from observations and modeling
We analyzed 40 year data sets of daily average visibility (a proxy for surface aerosol concentration) and hourly precipitation at seven weather stations, including three stations located on the Taihang Mountains, during the summertime in northern China. There was no significant trend in summertime total precipitation at almost all stations. However, light rain decreased, whereas heavy rain incr...
متن کاملStatus and preparation of prediction models for ozone as an air pollutant in Shiraz, Iran
In the present study, air quality analyses for ozone (O3) were conducted in Shiraz, a city in the south of Iran. The measurements were taken from 2011 through 2012 in two different locations to prepare average data in the city. The average concentrations were calculated for every 24 hours, each month and each season. Results showed that the highest concentration of ozone occurs generally in the...
